pollution... Time travel is tricky, and so is the attempt to change the course of
history. But Gutiérrez is not a determinist. He offers a circular array

done, in some measure, by all men” (Borges, “The Form of the Sword”
120 Ficciones) In Gutierrez’s novel, what happens in Villapintada and
the interactions among its inhabitants are somewhat representative of the social
dynamics in Latin America which seem to be rooted in long established traditions
